The bowl or centrepiece celebrates the designer’s craftsmanship, with each gesture seemingly leaving its decorative imprint on the smooth, lustrous surface of the bucchero.
The irregular contours emphasise the handcrafted character of the piece, as bucchero is shaped by an entirely new creative force that draws inspiration from age-old craftsmanship to create a distinctly contemporary design object.
The term bucchero, derived from the Portuguese bucáro, meaning “fragrant clay”, is associated in Italy with the exquisite ceramics unearthed during excavations of Etruscan necropolises. The Etruscans made extensive use of this distinctive black pottery to create everyday objects, prized for their characteristic lustrous surface, elegant forms and refined craftsmanship.
The black-firing technique inspired by Etruscan bucchero has an almost magical quality: objects are fired in a reducing atmosphere, with little or no oxygen. This process produces pieces with their distinctive black colour, powerfully revealing the very essence of the ceramic-making process.
A contemporary spirit of exploration inspires experimentation with new production methods and innovative forms, shaping unique objects in bucchero’s distinctive all-black aesthetic.
